Gulf Coast Kids

Katrina’s devastation severely affected Mississippi as well. More than 250 schools were damaged or destroyed and more than 15,000 students were left homeless.

While physical rebuilding has moved ahead, there remains a real need to match the vision and coordination of these efforts in the area of human services. Combining long-term economic recovery with youth development, the focus in Mississippi is on developing academic and workforce readiness skills for middle and high school students. The initiative, which involves close coordination with the business community, includes mentoring, internships, career fairs and community service activities.
