Pres. Obama honors Senator Harris Wofford with prestigious Presidential Citizens Medal
The team at America’s Promise Alliance joins General and Mrs. Powell, President Obama and all Americans today in congratulating our friend and devoted partner Senator Harris Wofford on receiving the Presidential Citizens Medal. The Presidential Citizens Medal was established by President Nixon in 1969 and is the nation’s second-highest civilian honor recognizing American citizens who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens. Wofford was honored along with other recipients at a White House ceremony on Feb. 15.
As the former Special Assistant to President John F. Kennedy, co-founder of The Peace Corps and former CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, Wofford has served his country for more than 60 years. He started as a volunteer for the Army Air Corps in World War II and continued through government and community service during the terms of ten Presidents. In the 1950s, Wofford was a friend and adviser to Martin Luther King, Jr. In the 1960s, he served as President Kennedy’s Special Assistant for Civil Rights and helped Sargent Shriver launch the Peace Corps. After leaving the United States Senate in 1995, having served as a Senator from Pennsylvania, Wofford was appointed by President Clinton as the CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
In July of 2009, shortly after serving as an official surrogate for Barack Obama’s campaign for president, Wofford joined The Sheridan Group, a government relations firm in Washington D.C. dedicated to achieving breakthrough advocacy results for the common good. As a senior strategist at TSG, Wofford continues to work on what he often refers to as ‘the causes of his career.’
Senator Wofford has been at our side since the founding days of America's Promise Alliance and remains an active and influential visionary for our work today. An advocate for service to others and expanding opportunity for our most disadvantaged citizens and children, his example has been a beacon for our work. He is most deserving of this great honor and today we celebrate all his accomplishments and say thank you.
