Youth advocates gear up for National Mentoring Month in January

12/15/2011

Grad Nation is a national movement to transform awareness of the dropout crisis into sustained, results-driven action. One way to join the Grad Nation effort is to become a mentor. National Mentoring Month (NMM), held for the past ten years in January, raises awareness about the important role mentoring can play in academic engagement and draws a spotlight on the positive effect mentoring can have on young lives. Together, the Harvard School of Public Health, MENTOR and the Corporation for National and Community Service are working to focus national attention on the need for mentors.

The goals for National Mentoring Month include:

  • Raising awareness of mentoring in its various forms;
  • Recruiting individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young people; and,
  • Promoting the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their constituents in mentoring.

On January 24 and 25 the 2nd Annual National Mentoring Summit will take place at The Fairmont in Washington, D.C. The theme for Summit is Invest in the Future: Mentor a Child. The Summit is being hosted by MENTOR, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Harvard School of Public Health, the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and United Way Worldwide. A capacity crowd of 450 will enjoy inspiring speakers, as well as informative, skill-building workshops.

Those who cannot attend the summit can prepare for NMM by taking advantage of some resources the Harvard School of Public Health, MENTOR and the Corporation for National and Community Service created to promote mentoring.
