El Paso Dropout Prevention Summit

Highlights:

Almost 200 education and community leaders attended the summit which was themed MY PREP (Middle School Youth, Prevention Retention El Paso). The keynote speaker was Dr. James Vasquez, Executive Director of the Educational Service Center (ESC) Region 19. The agenda for the summit was developed by a planning committee that included representatives from businesses such as State Farm; non-profit agencies such as Communities in Schools, Boys and Girls Clubs; and local school districts. After the keynote speech, participants attended breakout work sessions. Participating youth provided a perspective that may not have been considered by the community participants. The summit concluded with reports from each of the workgroups, and a locally produced video focusing on stories of El Paso’s dropouts was shown. A majority of the participants are committed to working together to assure successful completion of the summit’s goals and objectives, and the workgroups will meet again in the next few months
