Kentucky Dropout Prevention Summit
Summit Location: Frankfurt, KY
Led by Governor and First Lady Beshear, the summit was the launch of a statewide mobilization effort called, Everyone Graduates, a Community Approach. Six regional summits will be organized immediately following the state event culminating in June 2010. Representatives at the summit included state cabinet secretaries, state board of education, local administrators and community leaders. A website (www.graduate.ky.gov) will help communicate efforts and representatives of the state summit will attend every regional event. Over 300 people attended the summit which included a presentation from Marian Wright-Edelman, Founder and President, Children’s Defense Fund.
Summit Planning Team:
- America’s Promise affiliate in Kentucky, the health community, business sector members and young people.
- The Kentucky Youth Development Coordinating Council will be an important partner in the planning efforts. The council includes representatives from the state House and Senate, 14 government agencies—ranging from the Department of Public Health to the Office of Drug Control Policy—and three youth members; their involvement will reach multiple sectors at once. Glenn Means, a youth board member of Kentucky Child Now and member of the national America’s Promise Youth Partnership Team, will be an instrumental youth voice in the process.
