Los Angeles, CA Community Summit

Los Angeles

Event Name

Alliance 2014

Event Description

The goal for the Alliance 2014 Summit was to a convene community, education, business, and philanthropic leaders to celebrate parents and strengthen partnerships for greater student success. The Los Angeles community came together this fall for Alliance 2014, hosted by Families in Schools. The event drew about 200 community members. Participants were not only local, but also included members from neighboring communities and state-level representatives, sending the message that the whole community is invested in bringing change to Los Angeles. The event centered on the need to engage more parents in the education of their children. To kick off the day, Families in Schools selected three active parent advocates in Los Angeles as the 2014 recipients of Award for Excellence in Parent Engagement. The lunch plenary offered two perspectives from equally moving individuals. State Senator Ricardo Lara shared his personal story of growing up with immigrant parents and the impact they had on his success. Civil Rights Attorney and co-founder of the Advancement Project Connie Rice shared her journey as an advocate for students and the importance of parent involvement.
