Nevada Dropout Prevention Summit
Summit Location : Las Vegas, NV
Over 300 state leaders attended the summit hosted by the Nevada Public Education Foundation that built upon the Ready for Life campaign a public/private state collaboration to improve outcomes for youth. As the summit leaders stated a goal to increase the high school graduation rate by 10% by 2013 with a baseline of 67.4% from 2007. Their new target is 77.4% by 2013.
- Media was present and included coverage from the Las Vegas morning newspaper, several television and radio stations.
- Next steps include a policy platform that will be taken to the legislature at their next session which begins January 2009. They are talking about ways to collaborate with other initiatives throughout the state to create synergies and come together with possible solutions to increase the graduation rate.
Summit Planning Team:
The planning team included representatives from the Governor’s office, young people in school, young people who have dropped out, and representatives from State Farm and the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. There were also representatives from the Nevada School Superintendent Association, Nevada Volunteers, Communities in Schools of Nevada, United Way of Southern Nevada.
