Fighting hunger can be as easy as eating out at a restaurant, thanks to the No Kid Hungry campaign’s Dine Out initiative.
Throughout September’s Hunger Action Month, the No Kid Hungry campaign has partnered with more than 15,000 restaurants and their guests across the country to provide food stability for the one in six children living with hunger in America.
Denny’s, Shake Shack, Au Bon Pain, PF Chang’s, and Arby’s are a few of the big names No Kid Hungry has partnered with to fund grants, expertise, research, advocacy, and support for local programs that feed hungry youth and families.
When guests dine at participating restaurants, they have the opportunity to donate and receive various rewards––coupons, discounts on particular menu items, and more. Through these promotions and by donating percentages of sales on popular menu items, participating restaurants have raised more than $58 million since the Dine Out initiative started in 2008.
Each dollar donated can connect one hungry child to 10 meals, according to Share Our Strength, the organization that leads the No Kid Hungry campaign.
“When a child comes to school hungry, you see a few things: you see children who are crying, kids who are lashing out. You see kids who have no interest in schoolwork,” Clint Mitchell, an elementary school principal, told No kid Hungry.
Kids who go hungry can’t learn as fast or as well, impairing their overall academic performance. They’re sick more and hospitalized more. They’re more likely to have difficulty getting along with others, and are more likely to be suspended.
Don, 16, told No Kid Hungry: “My focus is different when I’m hungry. Of course I’m gonna be thinking about food. I’m gonna be thinking about which one of my classmates got food, I’m gonna be thinking about which one of them might share their food.”
