Zone 126 creates parents as partners in their student's education
December 13, 2013
Zone 126, an America’s Promise Alliance Parent/Family Engagement grantee in Astoria, NY, recently provided a series of workshops as part of the organization’s strategy of engaging parents and families in their children’s education.
The workshop series were conducted at Astoria House’s community center and two Zone 126 partner elementary schools. The workshops covered the topics of 3rd Grade Reading Proficiency and Common Core Learning Standards, Summer Learning Loss, and ‘Setting Your Child Up for Success’ during a new school year. Workshops were conducted in both English and Spanish and attended by as many as 20+ parents/families per session. Parents positively reacted to the sessions and openly discussed their desires in learning more about these topics, and learn quick, easy tips that they could utilize at home with their children on a day – to – day basis. All parents left with follow-up resources, books for their children, and engagement techniques they had learned and practiced during the workshops.
Zone126 coordinates and drives the efforts of a group of individuals and organizations with a common mission of seeing all children from Astoria and Long Island City’s Zones of Promise graduate from high school and attain post-secondary education by providing programs and services from cradle to career.
