Tonya J. Williams
Bringing 10 years of communications and public relations experience to America’s Promise Alliance, Tonya J. Williams serves as the manager of media and external relations. In this role she contributes to the development, direction and implementation of the overall communications strategy for America’s Promise, the GradNation campaign, the Center for Promise (research institute at Boston University) and other organizational initiatives.
Tonya achieves this by managing media outreach, building relationships with external leaders; implementing communications tactics and initiatives; promoting events; supporting partner initiatives; and working collaboratively across all levels of the organization.
Prior to joining the team, Tonya worked as an independent communications consultant and freelancer as well as communications associate for The Caraway Group, Inc. and The Carter Malone Group, both public relations agencies.
Over the life of her career, Tonya has provided communications and media relations counsel to clients like AT&T, Teach for America, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, ColorofChange.org, NAACP and George Washington University, among others.
In her local community, Tonya has served as the communications director for the Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network. She is also the former national membership director for ColorComm, Inc., a communications organization connecting women of color.
Tonya earned a masters in professional studies in public relations and corporate communication from Georgetown University, and has a BA in journalism from the University of Memphis.
