Defining Webs of Support: A New Framework to Advance Understanding of Relationships and Youth Development

In this brief, the authors present a web of support framework to describe how youth relate to adults and peers in their lives, and how these relationships provide the supports necessary for young people to thrive. This framework is composed of three key layers, each of which contributes to a young person’s development: relationships, resources, and networks/social capital.
Blended Learning Offers Promise as a Strategy for Re-engaging Students

This paper presents a landscape analysis of how blended learning currently is being used as a strategy to serve young adults, age 16-24, who have re-engaged in education in an effort to obtain a high school diploma or equivalency. The analysis is based on a review of relevant empirical research and interviews with program developers, practitioners and policy makers in the field.  Contributing to a nascent body of literature, this report highlights examples of how blended learning is being implemented in schools and community-based organizations.

Bright Bodies

The Yale Bright Bodies Weight Management Program is a family-based, intensive lifestyle intervention that uses nutrition education, behavior modification and exercise. The program is designed for ethnically diverse, obese, inner-city youth. Participants and caregivers are provided nutrition education and behavior modification techniques in 40-minute sessions, once per week, for six months, followed by every other week for the next six months.
Out-of-School Time Toolkit

This toolkit is a resource for United Ways and their community partners who seek to deepen their out-of-school time efforts so that more young people have access to quality programs. Over the past three years, United Way Worldwide, with the ongoing support of jcpenney, has provided grants and technical assistance to a number of local United Ways to help them strengthen out-of-school time systems in their communities.
Project Towards No Drug Abuse

Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND) is a drug prevention program for high school youth who are at risk for drug use and violence-related behavior. The current version of the Project TND curriculum contains twelve 40-minute interactive sessions taught by teachers or health educators over a 3-week period. Sessions provide instruction in motivation activities to not use drugs; skills in self-control, communication, and resource acquisition; and decision-making strategies. The program is delivered universally, but has been used in both traditional and alternative, high-risk high schools.
Safe Dates

Safe Dates is a ten-session dating abuse prevention program consisting of both school and community components. The school component has a curriculum that is implemented in schools by regular classroom teachers and targets primary prevention, while the community component targets secondary prevention by providing support groups and activities for youth as well as information for parents. The curriculum in the school component can also be presented by community resource people outside of the school setting.
Strong African American Families Program

The Strong African American Families (SAAF) project is a 7-week interactive educational program for African American parents and their early adolescent children. The intervention program is based on an empirical model of the processes linked to psychological adjustment, substance use and high-risk behavior in rural African American youth. Early adolescence is the period in which children gain increasing control over their behavior, begin forming friendships based on similarities and common interests, and develop attitudes toward substances and substance use.
Family Engagement for High School Success Toolkit: Planning and Implementing an Initiative to Support the Pathway to Graduation for At-Risk Students

This toolkit highlights the lessons learned from a planning process that tasked 15 local United Way “pilot sites” with bringing together schools, community organizations, families, and other stakeholders to a develop a comprehensive family engagement initiative. With support from UWW and the Harvard Family Research Project, these pilot sites adopted outcome-focused approaches with the aim of designing family engagement strategies to remove obstacles to engagement, and, ultimately, build stronger connections between families and schools.
