According to the 2015 Building a Grad Nation report, the national high school graduation rate has hit a record high at 81.4 percent – on track to achieve 90 percent by 2020. But while the overall news is encouraging, there is still significant work to be done, particularly for students of color, students from low-income families, and young people with disabilities whose graduations are lagging behind the national average.
Don't Call Them Dropouts

Language is important.  Labels matter. With the report we are releasing today, we recommend that we stop using the term “dropout" when referring to young people who leave school without graduating. The young people our Center for Promise interviewed specifically asked that we not call them dropouts because this is not how they think of themselves, and their stories and our survey results confirm this reality. Yes, they left school, but they did not quit, and we should not and cannot quit on them.

America’s Promise Alliance has launched its first-ever research center, in collaboration with Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences. The opening of the Center for Promise is a key part of the Grad Nation campaign. The mission of the Center is to develop a deep knowledge and understanding about what is needed to help create the conditions so that all young people in America have the opportunity to succeed in school and life.
