South Dakota Dropout Prevention Summit
Summit Location: Best Western Ramkota Hotel
Volunteers of America, Dakotas partnered with the South Dakota Office of Indian Education and Technology & Innovation in Education to host the 2009 Indian Education and Dropout Prevention Summit. The summit built upon the success of past Indian Education Summits, but focused exclusively on how to increase graduation rates for all students in South Dakota. Keynote Speakers included Governor Mike Rounds, Secretary of Education Tom Oster, and Greg Darnieder, Special Assistant and Advisor to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. 300 representatives from across the state attended. Breakout sessions addressed crucial issues in dropout prevention such as parental involvement, service-learning, college and workforce preparedness, financial literacy, and youth resiliency. Summit participants were challenged to implement successful programs into their local districts and schools.
