John Harper currently serves as Vice President of Resource Development for America's Promise Alliance, the nation's largest network of people working to improve the lives of children and youth. In this role, John is responsive for raising the necessary revenue to meet the organization's short and long-term needs through building and managing relationships with all philanthropic partners, including foundations, corporations and individuals.
Prior to joining America's Promise, John led development efforts for Turnaround for Children, a national nonprofit working to understand and address the impact of poverty and adversity on a child's development and the resulting impact on the nation's public schools. During his tenure, John raised the necessary philanthropic support to transform the organization from solely a school support organization to a national thought-leader on how to re-imagine the American public education system. Previously, John served as Vice President of the Institute for Responsible, an intensive leadership development program for talented African-American men. An alumnus of the program, John managed all development, marketing and strategic planning activities for the organization. John began his career in pubic charter schools, working with Friends of E Prep Schools (now Breakthrough Schools) and Uncommon Schools, where he helped to secure more than $20 million to support the expansion of both networks.
John holds a B.A. in African-American studies and Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music. He currently resides in Washington, DC.
