Monika Kincheloe is Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships. In this role, Monika leads the effort to increase the nation’s graduation rate to 90 percent by linking state and local practitioners with best practice in improving outcomes for young people. She leads the execution of the GradNation Action Platform in collaboration with her America’s Promise colleagues, partner organizations, and state and local partners across the country. Early in her career, Monika was a fourth-grade teacher in Marianna, AR in the Mississippi Delta region where her students achieved more than one year of growth in a single academic year. During those years, she lived on a cotton farm without internet. Prior to joining America’s Promise, Monika was a lead program officer at the U.S. Department of Education for nearly six years in the Office of the Deputy Secretary and later in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. She provided policy translation, technical assistance, and performance management services to education leaders in eight state education agencies. Her content expertise includes accountability systems, school improvement efforts, and strategic uses of federal funds. Monika also worked closely with state leaders in four Race to the Top states. Monika was part of the Department’s initial effort to transition the country from Elementary and Secondary Education Act under No Child Left Behind to the Every Student Succeeds Act.
Monika holds a B.S. in Public Health from the George Washington University and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School. She was a Presidential Management Fellow and a Leadership for Educational Equity Public Leaders Fellow. Monika volunteers in Alexandria City Public Schools, practices yoga, and enjoys traveling.
