Tacoma Dropout Prevention Summit



The United Way of Pierce County in partnership with the Alliance Youth of Pierce County hosted a Pierce County Graduation Summit in Tacoma, Washington. The summit had two goals 1) raising awareness of the drop out issue for individual students and the community and 2) highlighting that dropouts are a community issue that affects us all. Over 140 people attended the summit from education, juvenile justice, law enforcement, social services, faith-based organizations and business. The first half of the summit included a panel discussion facilitated by Erin Jones, Assistant Superintendent for Student Achievement, from the Office of the Superintend of Public Instruction. Other presenters included Rick Allen, President and CEO of United Way of Pierce County, Frank Cuthbertson, Pierce County, Superior Court Judge, Tom Seigel – Bethel School District Superintendent, Trish Roark, Vice President of Operations, State Farm Insurance. Workshop sessions covered issues including: Connecting Youth to Career Pathways, Bridging the Achievement Gap, Connecting with Hard to Reach Youth, Ensuring Education Success for Youth in Foster Care.
