Virginia Dropout Prevention Summit

Summit Location: Richmond, VA

Highlights:

The Virginia Department of Education hosted the summit which drew over 600 representatives from around the state.

  • Representatives included Governor Tim Kaine, state senators, the state superintendent, members of the board of education, teachers, administrators, parent groups, youth leaders and community-based organizations.
  • John Bridgeland of Civic Enterprises facilitated a panel on youth engagement.
  • Media coverage included reporters from the Richmond Times Dispatch, the Daily Press, and the Winchester Star.
  • The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), an interdivisional work group is planning a summer institute: Vision to Practice. Follow-up regional meetings within the state are planned for March and April 2009 in Lynchburg and in Southwest Virginia. In addition, VDOE staff is participating in the planning for the cities of Norfolk and Richmond summits of 2009.
