Voices of Youth: A Discussion on Education, Resilience, Homelessness, and Hope

SchoolHouse Connection, Civic Enterprises, America’s Promise Alliance and the Institute for Children, Poverty, & Homelessness invite you to:

Monday, June 12, 2017 10:00 am – 11:30 am

U.S. Senator Patty Murray and U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski
Washington, DC

One year after the release of Hidden in Plain Sight, last year’s groundbreaking report on the educational experiences of students experiencing homelessness, this powerful briefing will offer an exceptional look at the issues, including:
  • A facilitated discussion among thirteen students from across the country who have experienced homelessness in their preK-12 careers, and who are now sophomores or juniors in college. The students will discuss the challenges that they experienced in their preK-12 education – and that they may be experiencing currently in higher education – as well as the people, programs, and internal attributes that have helped them persist and achieve academic success.
  • 50 state progress reports, summarizing available state-level data on the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness, from early childhood through postsecondary education.
  • New research on the significant and harmful impact of homelessness on the education and well-being of children and youth, from early childhood through post-secondary.
Students from Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington state will be participating in the discussion. The students are participants in SchoolHouse Connection’s Youth Leadership and Scholarship Program.
Ms. Barb Dexter, local homeless education liaison for the Anchorage School District (Alaska), will moderate the student discussion.
