, president & CEO of America’s Promise Alliance
, the nation’s largest partnership dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth, provided the following statement in response to President Obama’s announcement today in Knoxville, TN about a new proposal providing two-years of free tuition for students enrolling in community colleges in the U.S.
"There is virtually no way for anyone to achieve his or her American Dream without an effective education. We support efforts to remove barriers to education, including financial barriers. The national norm for basic education, defined by what is free for all to access, currently extends through high school. The President’s proposal would extend that national norm two more years, to post-secondary education, which is the right direction for young people in America as well as our economy.”
