Princess Diana Gown Auction Proceeds To Benefit America’s Promise Alliance

eBay Bidding on Couture Evening Gown Begins August 12th

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The America’s Promise Alliance (the Alliance) today announced it has been selected the sole beneficiary of an upcoming international charity eBay auction sponsored by cable television network WE tv from August 12-22 featuring a one-of-a-kind Lady Diana Princess of Wales evening gown valued at more than $300,000. The blue chiffon gown designed by Catherine Walker was worn by Princess Diana to the Cannes Film Festival in 1987 and to the opening of Miss Saigon in 1989. WE tv purchased this gown and two others as part of the Sequins Save Lives event at Christie’s Auction House in New York City in June 1997 shortly before Princess Diana passed away.

"Princess Diana was an icon and role model to women all over the world," said Kim Martin, General Manager of WE tv. "WE tv is honored to carry on her spirit of giving by donating all proceeds from this auction to America's Promise Alliance, a charity that aligns closely to our public affairs initiatives, WE Empowers Women."

Money raised from the auction, which has a starting bid of $125,000, will be used to support the Alliance’s work to ensure that more of the nation’s young people experience the necessary developmental resources—the Five Promises—caring adults; safe places; healthy start; effective education; and opportunities to help others—that they need to succeed. This includes the Alliance’s new 15 in 5 campaign which aims to improve high school completion rates and the lives of 15 million disadvantaged young people over the next five years by increasing access to health care and insurance, middle-school student civic and vocational engagement and using schools as hubs for the delivery of comprehensive resources to kids.

“Princess Diana’s work to improve the lives of disadvantaged children remains an inspiration to us all,” said Marguerite W. Kondracke, president and CEO, America’s Promise Alliance. “She was proof that one person could make a positive difference and we are pleased to be part of something that will honor her legacy.”

WE tv chose to have the auction’s proceeds go to the Alliance because its work to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and youth is aligned closely with the philanthropic work of Princess Diana and the mission of the network’s public affairs initiative WE Empowers Women (WEW). WEW is a nationwide initiative dedicated to providing education and assistance to women and girls to help them achieve their full potential.
