U.S. High School Graduation Rate Hits New Record High

“The latest national graduation number – 81 percent - shows that the country is continuing to make progress on increasing on-time high school graduation rates, and that means more young people will have the chance for a promising future,” said John Gomperts, president & CEO of America’s Promise Alliance, leader of the GradNation campaign to reach a 90 percent on-time high school graduation rate by 2020.

According to Building a Grad Nation: Progress and Challenge in Ending the High School Dropout Epidemic 2014, a report published in April by America's Promise Alliance and its partners, the four-year high school graduation rate in the United States reached 80 percent for the first time ever in 2012. But while the overall rate is on track to reach the 90 percent goal set by the alliance's Building a GradNation Campaign, the report notes the troubling persistence of achievement gaps for low-income students and students of color.

GradNation Community Summits initiative begins next week in St. Louis

America’s Promise Alliance is kicking off the start of the GradNation Community Summits initiative next week with the first summit in St. Louis, MO on September 16. These 100 community summits, which will be held across the country over the next four years. In addition to St. Louis, 14 Summits will be held before the end of the 2013 in Birmingham, AL; Jackson, MS; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Providence, RI; Toledo, OH; Rochester, NY; Las Vegas, NV; Dallas, TX; Seattle/Tacoma, WA; Louisville, KY; Atlanta, GA; Miami, FL; San Francisco, CA and Tucson, AZ.
Detroit schools begin culture change by tackling dropout crisis

Just five years ago, average graduation rates among Detroit public high schools hovered around 50 percent. Many institutions simply became known as "dropout factories." On the east side of the city, Osborn High School student Stepha'n Quicksey has faced many challenges growing up in a rough neighborhood. Having watched five of his siblings drop out of high school, Quicksey had academic struggles that were symptomatic of the environment in which he grew up. He carried a 0.3GPA in his second year of sixth grade and was not the only student at risk of dropping out.
Grad Nation Communities Network Spotlight

Chula Vista, Calif. is a part of a network of Grad Nation Communities that is increasing graduation rates by ensuring that younger students are reading on grade level, and that older students have mentors and caring adults to support them. Graduation Works focuses on multiple strategies including the Graduation Coach Campaign and Chula Vista Reads, which is associated with the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.
