California School District Uses Design Thinking to Raise Grad Rates

Like many school districts across America, California’s New Haven Unified School District is trying to narrow its achievement and graduation gaps. And it’s using design thinking to do it. “Young people are pushed out of a school system that doesn’t love and accept them,” Dr. Arlando Smith, co-superintendent of NHUS, said at the UC Exceed GradNation Community Summit on Sept. 24. “It just tolerates them.”

GradNation Community Summits initiative begins next week in St. Louis

America’s Promise Alliance is kicking off the start of the GradNation Community Summits initiative next week with the first summit in St. Louis, MO on September 16. These 100 community summits, which will be held across the country over the next four years. In addition to St. Louis, 14 Summits will be held before the end of the 2013 in Birmingham, AL; Jackson, MS; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Providence, RI; Toledo, OH; Rochester, NY; Las Vegas, NV; Dallas, TX; Seattle/Tacoma, WA; Louisville, KY; Atlanta, GA; Miami, FL; San Francisco, CA and Tucson, AZ.
