I thought if I let a little time pass the sadness, fear, anger and frustration that has surrounded me since learning of the events in Baton Rouge, St. Paul and Dallas would dissipate a bit. I just needed a little break in the clouds so my emotions wouldn’t be so raw and my thoughts could become clearer. That didn’t happen. I’m as raw as when I first heard the news and perhaps even more angry and frustrated.

A few years ago, I had the chance to spend a few hours with Bob Putnam at his house in New Hampshire.  We talked about a book he was working on, which he had actually delayed his retirement to write.  Bob had become increasingly troubled by what he observed, and what the data confirms—that we have a growing “opportunity gap” for America’s young people.

In South Hampton Roads, VA, we have 21,000 children living in extreme poverty. Education is the way out of poverty. And poverty is the enemy of education. Our initiative, United for Children, is a public-private partnership focused on driving educational success for our poorest children to break the cycle of poverty. Our goal is to get them to graduate high school on time, ready for college or career and ultimately a successful, self-sufficient life.
