Nearly 1.6 million students are in California’s public education system, including almost one-third of the nation’s English language learners. In California, one out of every four students is an English language learner. While San Diego Unified School District boasts an overall high school graduation rate of approximately 82 percent as of 2015, only 73 percent of English learners graduate high school in four years.

Back in 2010, the GradNation campaign set a goal of 90 percent high school graduation by 2020, and we’ve made great progress since then, reaching an all-time high graduation rate of 82.3 percent.

These 100 community summits, which will be held across the country over the next four years. Detroit schools begin culture change by tackling dropout crisis

Just five years ago, average graduation rates among Detroit public high schools hovered around 50 percent. Many institutions simply became known as "dropout factories." On the east side of the city, Osborn High School student Stepha'n Quicksey has faced many challenges growing up in a rough neighborhood. Having watched five of his siblings drop out of high school, Quicksey had academic struggles that were symptomatic of the environment in which he grew up. He carried a 0.3GPA in his second year of sixth grade and was not the only student at risk of dropping out.

America’s Promise recently convened representatives from ten Grad Nation Communities in Jackson, Miss. Hosted by the United Way of the Capital Area and Operation Shoestring, the purpose of the meeting was to facilitate the sharing of promising practices, provide networking opportunities, and to learn about the successful dropout prevention strategies that have been implemented in Jackson to help students stay in school and graduate from high school prepared to succeed.

City of Sacramento and California Mayors host State of California Graduation Summit with goal to increase graduation rates

WestEd held the California Mayors Graduation Summit April 29 as part of the national movement supported by America's Promise Alliance, AT&T and State Farm, along with the James Irvine Foundation. The summit was hosted by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson along with other mayors from across the state including San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom; Stockton Mayor Anne Johnston, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates and Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox.
