OUR WORK: A Framework for Accelerating Progress for Children and Youth in America

How can we take what’s been learned and accelerate progress for young people in America, especially for those young people who are most vulnerable? How can we create the conditions for success for more young people, more quickly? To answer these questions, America’s Promise reviewed research about what’s changed in the past 20 years in young people’s lives and in our understanding of youth development. We surveyed our network, spoke with young people, and interviewed more than 200 people representing nonprofits, corporations, foundations, research and policy entities, educational institutions…

Youth in Poverty Six Times More Likely to Experience Detrimental Levels of Adversity Than Higher-Income Peers

More than one-quarter of children living in poverty (28 percent) experience three or more reported adversities in their adolescence, a rate nearly six times that of their middle and upper class peers, according to a new report by the Center for Promise, the applied research institute of America’s Promise Alliance.

Safe Dates

Safe Dates is a ten-session dating abuse prevention program consisting of both school and community components. The school component has a curriculum that is implemented in schools by regular classroom teachers and targets primary prevention, while the community component targets secondary prevention by providing support groups and activities for youth as well as information for parents. The curriculum in the school component can also be presented by community resource people outside of the school setting.

RAND Promising Practices: Counselors Care (CARE)

Counselors Care (CARE) is a school-based intervention for high-school students at risk for suicide. CARE is a two-part, four-hour program, beginning with a personalized computer-assisted assessment of risk and protective factors, and followed by a brief counseling intervention designed to enhance a youth's personal resources and social network connections.

Project Towards No Drug Abuse

Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND) is a drug prevention program for high school youth who are at risk for drug use and violence-related behavior. The current version of the Project TND curriculum contains twelve 40-minute interactive sessions taught by teachers or health educators over a 3-week period. Sessions provide instruction in motivation activities to not use drugs; skills in self-control, communication, and resource acquisition; and decision-making strategies. The program is delivered universally, but has been used in both traditional and alternative, high-risk high schools.

Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC)

January 15, 2014

MTFC provides severely delinquent youths with foster care in community families trained in behavior management, and emphasizes preventing contact with delinquent peers.  Typical community treatment for such youth, by contrast, often involves placement in a group residential care facility with other troubled youth.
