AT&T Contributes $1 Million for Grad Nation to support student-led programs that tackle the dropout crisis

To combat the alarming high school dropout rate among American students, AT&T and America’s Promise Alliance (the Alliance) today announced a $1 million contribution to fund a re-granting initiative led by the Alliance that will provide young people nationwide with the opportunity to develop and implement their own program ideas for increasing graduation rates.

The First Tee putting Grad Nation to work in each of its chapters

The First Tee, an Alliance partner and recent adopter of the Grad Nation goal, is fulfilling its commitment to end the high school dropout crisis by bolstering collaboration both nationwide and on a community level. As an organization that provides all Five Promises at each of its chapters, The First Tee has designated Promise Places in all 197 of its chapters nationwide. It will focus its efforts in Houston, Nashville, and Chicago -- three Alliance Featured Communities-- to intensify education inside and outside the classroom through two unique programs.

Upcoming Dropout Prevention Summits

America’s Promise Alliance officially launched the Dropout Prevention Campaign on April 1, 2008. The goals of the Dropout Prevention Summits are to raise awareness of the high school dropout crisis and to bring together partners from multiple sectors, including education, state and local government, and business, to address the issue. In total, the Alliance will sponsor 103 summits: one in each of the 50 states and 53 additional summits in local communities. The Alliance is getting off to a running start in 2010 with eight summits scheduled to take place in January.

America’s Promise Alliance Chair Alma J. Powell calls on nation’s pediatricians to help reduce high school dropout rate

America’s Promise Alliance Chair Alma J. Powell gave the keynote address October 17 at the 2009 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition at the Washington Convention Center. In her remarks titled “Delivering America’s Promise,” Mrs. Powell applauded the 7,000+ attendees for their tireless efforts on the frontlines of children’s health and thanked the AAP for its partnership with the Alliance on its work to ensure more children have access to quality healthcare.

New study of eight community schools indicates rising graduation rates

The Coalition for Community Schools in partnership with the National Association for Secondary School Principals is pleased to release a review of eight community schools yielding evidence of rising graduation and college going rates and a reduction in dropout rates. Schools from around the nation: Bronx, NY; Chicago, IL; Cincinnati, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, OR; and Tukwila, WA, have found a way to reconnect with youth, enriching their educational experiences. Grad Nation Action Forum held as part of effort to reduce the nation’s dropout rate

America’s Promise Alliance brought together community teams, national partners and funding partners – all committed to the goal of helping the nation cut the dropout rate in half by 2018 – for the Grad Nation Action Forum September 16-18 in Washington, D.C.

America’s Promise Alliance Dropout Prevention Summits Update

In an effort to reduce America’s high school dropout rates, the Alliance introduced the Dropout Prevention Campaign in April 2008. More than 45 Dropout Prevention Summits have been held in cities nationwide – bringing together more than 14,000 mayors and governors, business owners, child advocates, school administrators, students and parents to develop workable solutions and action plans. Summits were recently held in Cincinnati, St. Louis and Maryland. Upcoming summits include West Virginia, Maine and Montana.
