Communities In Schools Founder Bill Milliken Honored with Jefferson Award for Public Service

Bill Milliken, founder of Communities In Schools and leading youth advocate, received the prestigious 2009 National Jefferson Award for Public Service at a Gala Dinner and National Ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 17. The awards ceremony was preceded by a U.S. Senate reception in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The award, presented by the American Institute for Public Service, is in the category of Greatest Public Service Benefiting the Disadvantaged, and recognizes Milliken’s 40 years of work helping young people graduate school and prepare for life.

Diplomas Count 2009: Broader Horizons – The Challenge of College Readiness for All Students was released by Education Week and the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center June 9 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The report, produced with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, can be viewed online. The 2009 installment of the annual Diplomas Count report investigates one of the most critical issues facing the nation: meeting the challenge to prepare all students for college.

Gallup Student Poll Results Released May 5

A poll released may 5 by Gallup and America’s Promise Alliance shows that more than one-third of students surveyed in grades 5 – 12 are struggling or suffering, and half (50 percent) are not hopeful, as quantified by Gallup researchers. The findings mark the beginning of what will quickly become the largest-ever survey of American children, and will help school systems and communities benchmark progress and determine solutions to the dropout crisis.

Communities In Schools released initial results from the midpoint of its five-year longitudinal study, Communities In Schools and The Model of Integrated Student Services: A Proven Solution to America’s Dropout Epidemic. One of the most notable findings is that the Communities In Schools Model of providing integrated student services has a greater affect on school-level outcomes than providing services to students in an uncoordinated manner.
