Community
South Hamption Roads/Tidewater, Virginia
Event Name
GradNation Summit with Dr. Bruce Perry
Event Description
Poverty disrupts education. In South Hampton Roads, we have 21,000 children living in extreme poverty, defined as less than half the federal poverty level.
United Way of South Hampton Roads recognized we all must do more, recruiting powerful public and private partners to drive educational success for our poorest children as a way out of poverty. We are committed to supporting the “whole child,” working with partner schools to give students extra time with teachers, while improving children’s lives outside the classroom by supporting emotional and physical health and basic needs.
We start at birth with children facing the stress of poverty. We know early childhood experiences physically change young brains, dramatically impacting their ability to learn. So we’re featuring Dr. Bruce Perry, a world-renowned expert on how situational and psychological experiences physically affect how our brains develop.
