Graduate to Success in Northwest Indiana

Hosted by READY NWI, in partnership with America’s Promise

Event Description:

Graduate to Success will occur on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 8:00am-2:00pm at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville, Indiana. The focus will be on the importance of engaging our local students in multiple pathways for educational and career success, beginning with graduation from high school with standards met by all graduates for entry into post-high school education and training programs.

Opening speakers will include community leaders linking the importance of an educated workforce and the retention of young adult talent as a necessary ingredient for economic development growth and success. Keynote address by Indiana Commissioner of Higher Education, Teresa Lubbers, who will address the need for higher education credentials and the multiple affordable pathways now available to students in Indiana to obtain post-high school degrees and other credentials valued by employers. A key feature of the event will be local students’ perspective on three key issues:

  • What young adults need from employers
  • How young adults view the attractiveness of Northwest Indiana as a place to live and work
  • What high school students need beyond academics to prepare for careers in the Northwest Indiana region

Input from students will be followed by group sessions to develop specific recommendations for retaining local talent and reporting back by young adults to community leaders on the recommendations.
